A member of the order Marsupialia, or pouched
mammals. All but the OPOSSUM and an obscure
South American family are found only in
Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea, and a
few nearby islands. Unlike the higher
mammals, the marsupial embryo is generally
not connected to its mother by a placenta.
The young are born in an undiveloped state
and crawl to the mothers nippleswhich are in
her pouch, or marsupium, formed by a fold of
abdominal skin. Marsupials include the
KANGAROO, KOALA, TASMANIAN_DEVIL, and WOMBAT.
