  1. A member of the order Marsupialia, or pouched
  2. mammals. All but the OPOSSUM and an obscure
  3. South American family are found only in
  4. Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea, and a
  5. few nearby islands. Unlike the higher
  6. mammals, the marsupial embryo is generally
  7. not connected to its mother by a placenta.
  8. The young are born in an undiveloped state
  9. and crawl to the mothers nippleswhich are in
  10. her pouch, or marsupium, formed by a fold of
  11. abdominal skin. Marsupials include the
  12. KANGAROO, KOALA, TASMANIAN_DEVIL, and WOMBAT.
